PDF OF CARES CERTIFICATE
UK CARES is an independent, non-profit making certification body which was established in 1983 to provide confidence to
the users, purchasers and specifiers of reinforcing steels through a regime of regulation, testing and inspection.
It operates for the benefit of the construction industry offering certification schemes for companies that produce materials,
components or offer services to the reinforced concrete industry. Clients can specify CARES approved companies and products with confidence that they
will comply with the relevant product standards and without the need for verification testing by the purchaser or contractor.
CARES is controlled by its Members through the Authority's Board of Management which monitors the Authority's activities to
ensure that high levels of competence, independence and integrity are maintained. The Members comprise professional bodies and trade associations
representing users, specifiers, contractors and manufacturers including the Highways Agency. The Authority's Board of Management is chaired by
Professor George Somerville, and is made up of nominees of the Members of the Authority.
The Members of the Authority are as follows:
Association of Consulting Engineers
Institution of Structural Engineers
British Airports Authority
The Highways Agency
UK Steel Association (Long Products Group)
British Association for Reinforcement (BAR)
Post Tensioning Association (PTA)
Construction Confederation
Engineering Contractors Association (CECA)
CONSTRUCT
The Authority is accredited by the UKAS (UK Accreditation Service) for the product certification and quality management systems
(BS EN ISO 9001) certification. UKAS approves and monitors certification bodies on behalf of the UK government. The Authority is provisionally designated
on behalf of the Department of the Environment Transport and Regions by the Building Research Establishment as an approved body under the Construction
Products Directive for precast concrete products, reinforcing and prestressing steel products and post-tensioning systems. Full designation will follow
the publication of the relevant European Standards, which mean that CARES' certificates of approval for these products will be accepted throughout
European by all Member States in relation to the Construction Products Directive.
Certification of producers and suppliers of reinforcing steels by this Authority is required by those major construction
specifications such Specification for Highway Works, County Councils specifications and the National Building Specification.
